Love camping here. Hike or drive to the beach. 10 min hike (5 min drive if taking kids with lots of stuff) Use the resvervation system to get you site in advance, esp for weekends. Very clean restrooms & showers.

Great campground that has been completely redone giving more space per campsite. The beach is beautiful, but can be crowded on weekends and holidays. Plenty of hiking trails and things to do locally. Brand new visitors center, just outside the park. Go in in mid to late October for the best camping weather and beautiful fall colors.

We camped here in 2008 it is the best place to camp when we visit family! Lots to do and see and we are going back July 2nd through July 10 and we cant wait. Our Children (I say that lightly, since they are 20 and 22) can't wait to go back. Must be a great place when your kids want to go with! We rode the train from right outside the campground into Chicago and spent the day, what great fun.

Great campground. Completely upgraded 5 years ago. CG reduced to `40 sites for better quality experience. Site listing is wrong on many details. All sites are 50 amp electric and pets are indeed allowed. Great programming at Nature Center nearby and a very safe atmosphere.

While I'm sure the National Lakeshore campground is nice, you can't make reservations there. When you are driving three hours to take two kids, a dog and a cranky husband to the dunes, you don't exactly want to roll the dice on finding a site when you get there. The Indiana Dunes State Park campground has an excellent reservation system and is fully open year round. The comfort stations are clean and fairly new and temperature controlled. The sites are generous and rest naturally into the landscape. All of the sites on the northern edges are nestled into forested dune. They are smaller sites but beautiful. The main play set in the center of the campground is great. The nature center is very well put together. The camp store is ample. You can walk or ride your bike to the massive, historic beach house where you can have lunch or ice cream and swim in Lake Michigan. The dune trails can be challenging (walking up and down hills in sand) but the views are amazing. Did you know that cactus grow naturally on the dunes? A climb to the top of Mt. Tom followed by a running, tumbling decent, is about as much fun as you can have on sand. Want some city life mixed in? Just outside the park entrance you'll find a depot for the South Shore commuter train. For about $13 (round trip), less than you'd pay to park, you can take a relaxing ride into Chicago... right to Millenium Park! Spend a day shopping in the Windy City and be back in time to watch the sun set on the beach. This is not just a campground. It is a vacation destination. The only bad thing about the Dunes campground is that, like many of the most popular state parks, it fills up so quickly. My family likes to stay there the week of 4th of July every few years. In order to get the site I want on a holiday, I stay up six months to the day before our arrival to make our reservation at the stroke of midnight. Do stay at the Dunes! Don't wait long to book your site!

Great campground. They have done a LOT of work here to improve the campground, including deleting half the sites. Staff is always very polite, and TONS to do in the park itself. Beaches, hiking, biking and a great Nature Center that offers wonderful year round programs. We have always had a great time camping here, doing so several times a year. They have even started hosting events involving the campground, including the "HOWLoween" weekend, offering many activities, including a campsite decorating contest. It's a great place to camp. Wether you are alone, or with family, you will not regret your decision to stay here.
