My daughter remembers lots of black widows and no hot water in the bathrooms, although when we were there it was quite full. The campsites are a little close to one another, but Ft. Mountain is a lovely location. The naturalist is excellent and the kids had a wonderful time with her and her snakes. The lookouts over the mountains are gorgeous.

This park offers a lot for the hiker or off road bicycle entusiast as well as just getting away from civilization. The campsites are large and well maintained with gravel and landscape timbers. they have many pull-thru sites as well. Each site has a concrete table and benchs that are a little large for a normal size table cloth and bench covers. The park is near the 2900' level 8 miles from Chatsworth and 18 miles from Ellijay. The climb from Chatsworth is constant upward but the road is wide and there are many courtesey pull-offs on the way up. There is a lake and beach next to the campground with fishing and other water sports as well as a mini-golf. All of the hiking trails throughout the park are well marked and the views from the wooden viewing decks are breathtaking. There are no sewer hookups but all sites come with electric, water and cable TV. The baths are very clean but a little small with only 2 showers in each restroom. You have to enter through a coded gate each time you enter the camping area. The only negative thing is that they lock the main gate to the park at 10 pm with no entry or exit and so if you are late getting back from an excursion outside of the park you have no choice but to park and walk over a mile to the campground. They make no exceptions to this rule. you can also trail camp but have to register. Their cabins all are nice and big. their office has a camp store with limited supplies and so if you don't take it with you it is 8 miles to Chatsworth. The 18 mile ride to Ellijay is a very curvy road. At times they have bears in this area and so they allow no food or garbage to be left outside after 3 pm. The whole camground is shaded as you are in the forest and each site is first come first serve. Each site is marked with a color code for the size of camper allowed with blue 26' or smaller and white 26' and larger with a few handicapped spots. I suggest if you go during a peak season to make reservations ahead of time as this campground is near Atlanta and Chattanooga and usually fills up on the weekend. This is one of the better campgrounds in the Smokies and is a lot better than the campground at Amicola Falls about 35 miles away which is a little tight to navigate through and not as well kept although Amicola park is a pristine park.
